Auburn University Poultry

I believe that this is a practical world and that I can count only on what I earn. Therefore, I believe in work, hard work... -The Auburn Creed

My poultry experience started when my family bought a five house broiler farm. When I was not playing softball, I was working with my dad and grandfather on the farm. My daily tasks were to walk the houses, pick up the mortality and to make sure the water lines were at the correct height. My poultry experience expanded when I changed my major from animal science to poultry science. After switching, I also joined the Poultry Science Club and started working at the Auburn University Poultry Research Farm Unit. My poultry classes, the club, and working on the farm have allowed my passion of poultry to grow everyday. Our family broiler farms only allowed me a glimpse into one part of the industry. I quickly realized there was so much more to the industry than I thought there was. By working at the research unit, I get to see first hand why the industry has certain rules and regulations. I also get to see all the science that it takes to grow and process different breeds of birds. The club allows its members to have hands on experience in raising, processing, and smoking a flock of birds to sell for the club fundraiser. Through this club, the members can also establish connections with people in the poultry industry to get internships or jobs. During the 2015-2016 school year, I was elected as the club’s secretary. This leadership role taught me the importance of taking the minuites of meetings and keeping up with the member’s involvement in the club. It also taught me communication is key to any leadership role. Currently, I am the President for the club.
